2010 Podcast Awards!

As I sit here in early July I have to start thinking about the 2010 Podcast Awards. Honestly the past couple of years the event has been exhausting. It takes up well over 100 hours of my time each year to pull off.

Last year was the first year that we did not break even financially, after paying all expenses and increased trophy costs. I had about a $1000.00 in additional expenses that came out of Podcast Connects pockets. The goal is break even not loose money!

So the question I am asking myself should the awards continue. I am also irritated that last year we went to all that work and less than half of the winners were willing to come on the awards show. Plus Ustream.tv even though we warned them multiple times, got blown out when we went over 4000 people on the live stream.

While I will likely punish myself maybe it is time to bring in some podcasters to help. What do you think?

Can we Have more Categories Please!

That is the question I get asked the most when it comes to the Podcast Awards. My response is that each category cost close to $400.00 if we want to keep the standards high. The trophies we have made each year are custom designed.

They are produced by the same company that produces the Country Music Award Bullets. Any podcaster that has received one of these beautiful trophies will tell you that they are amazing. We have them laser engraved as well.

I would love to add categories but we need people to get out their wallets in advance of the 2010 event and step up to the plate.

2009 Podcast Awards Slate Finalized

The 2009 Podcast Awards show slate is finalized and I hope that we can get it validated, announced and online later today. Possible will do an official announcement on Sunday at the latest.

Each category took our 40+ reviewers over 5 hours each. This is the longest it has ever taken to review the shows. Frankly I was getting a bit nervous. But it is done and I think the slate looks pretty amazing.

Should be a great voting period as there will be some serious competition in almost every category.

Last year we introduced Podcast Sponsorships on the Podcast Awards sites largely because the big Podcast companies would not step up to the Table with their wallets. As we head into the 5th year we are seeing a significant number of podcast that sponsored the event last year step up to sponsors again largely due to the great ROI they received on their sponsorships last year.

In 2008 we saw the Podcast Awards website receive over 14 million hits leading up to and through the awards ceremony. I am already starting to see the traffic increase and it will continue to climb as it always does until the day the Podcast Award Nominations start and then the server will have to have dry ice thrown on top of it to keep it from melting down.

So far in 2009 the following companies have stood up to the Plate:

Our goal in 2009 is to raise between $5000.00 to $6000.00 the trophies last year where a little over $3500.00 every dime we raise minus the server and auditing firms expenses are turned back into prizes for the winners. This is a not for profit event for Podcast Connect as it has been in years past!

It’s Podcast Awards Season again, I am preparing the site tonight. The firm that manages the site will be putting us in pre-nomination mode tomorrow.

Podcast Nominations by your audiences will open at 2100 EST on Oct 4th so start getting your audiences prepared today to nominate your show.

We will be accepting sponsorships exactly as we were last year so be the first to get your sponsorship dollars in.

The awards take a huge amount of work each year, so much in fact that I had considered not holding the event this year. Over the past three weeks my email inbox has been exploding and I decided to go ahead and hold the event again. I am hoping that the volunteers step up like they did last year to help because without them it is a monumental job.
